The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitation method explained

Introduction

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitation method is not a process where adults spend hours wasting their time building models that will have to end up on an office shelf for years.

It is, in fact, a fantastic innovative process which makes the realisation of meeting objectives to be enriching, understood by stakeholders and capitalises on all the skills within the room. It is a facilitation tool which easily unlocks hidden knowledge and provides a deeper insight in the outcomes.

The process involves the Facilitator setting a build question in response to the agreed meeting objectives. Attendees answer the question with their hands firstly, by connecting parts and bricks to create physical metaphors for what the mind wants to say. Each participant shares their response, and the groups reflect through deep dive questioning from the Facilitator. The use of LEGO® elements enables participants in a meeting to take a speedy shortcut to the core of a problem or concept. The LEGO® elements work as a catalyst and when used for building metaphors, they trigger responses that individuals are probably or were previously unaware of.

The methodology is an inventive procedure designed to enhance innovation and business performance. With decades of research, it has been shown that this kind of hands-on, minds-on learning produces a more profound and fruitful understanding of the world and its potential. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology enhances the idea generation and refinement process, which in turn aids the provision of effective dialogue.

“You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than you can from a lifetime of conversation”

        Plato.

When we use the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Facilitation Method, we help attendees to explore the relationships and connections between people, systems, sectors, and structures. They have the opportunity to observe the dynamics both internal and external, explore various hypothetical scenarios, and gain awareness of the possibilities.

During one of our facilitated meetings, attendees will be building individual models, shared builds, and landscape models with LEGO® elements while they are given meaning through metaphors.

Once this has been done there is an opportunity to play out various possible scenarios which show systematic responses and consequences to change.

This process helps to deepen understanding, improves insight, and socially “bonds” together the group as it “plays” together. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Methodology will guide teams into upfront, open and honest conversations. Teams experience is that the real problems are tackled, and in the end, individuals will be able to see things through the eyes of their colleagues. The physical and tangible construction allows the group to have discussions which flow without the fear of personal vulnerability.
